I enjoyed this book from so many perspectives. As a life long library user and retired librarian many of the stories revived happy memories for me, because I was in so many of the same situations. First, as a first grader holding my father’s hand as he led me into the huge Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh to the last library where I worked which was a men’s medium security prison. I think the book would be a great gift for a library lover and those who predict the demise of libraries and our profession.Product details

What a pleasant surprise! A whimsical, well-written potpourri of anecdotes, observations and comments by two gentle, wise, and aware guardians of information, civility, and literacy. Makes you appreciate librarians' roles in kindling interest in learning, and in spreading knowledge and knowledge-acquisition skills. And, especially for those of us at a certain age, the book reminds one of all that we cherish in books--the physical, sensual experience that cannot be duplicated with an e-reader or e-pad. This book should be mandatory reading for all librarian students and library employees so that they too can pass along the traditions with helpfulness and humanity.
As far as I know, this may be the first book of its kind and one you won't want to miss. So many wonderful, interesting, touching behind-the-scenes stories written by librarians themselves. I've worked in public libraries and there were things that I didn't even know! The many pencil drawings of libraries and thought-provoking quotations add the final touch to this charming book. I can't imagine that any lover of books and libraries wouldn't enjoy this - and it would make a great gift too. The authors are giving all the proceeds from the sale of the book to various Friends of the Library groups - hows that for frosting on the cake? Oh....and speaking of cake.....there's a little library that keeps various cake pans on the shelf that people can borrow - the local children love picking out their birthday cake theme!
There's an updated version also......with more stories and artwork. Whichever version you get, it's a real gem for library-lovers. A great way to get the funny and interesting 'scoop' on what goes on 'behind the scenes' of libraries!
Excellent book. The Long Overdue Library Book was very entertaining and opened my eyes as to the real job of the librarian.
