I was somewhat disappointed in the novel. The comments by the author were helpful for who was real and who was fiction. A combination of odd characters. The history could have been developed more. The book did make me want to read more about the history of the aquarium and Cannery Row.Tags : Monterey Bay: A Novel [Lindsay Hatton] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. A beautiful debut set around the creation of the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium--and the last days of John Steinbeck's Cannery Row In 1940,Lindsay Hatton,Monterey Bay: A Novel,Penguin Press,1594206783,Coming Of Age,Historical,Literary,Fathers and daughters,Fathers and daughters;Fiction.,Historical fiction,Marine biologists,Marine biologists;Fiction.,Monterey (Calif.) - History - 20th century,Monterey (Calif.);History;20th century;Fiction.,Monterey Bay Aquarium,Ricketts, Edward Flanders,Steinbeck, John,AMERICAN HISTORICAL FICTION,California,FICTION Coming of Age,FICTION Historical General,FICTION Literary,Fiction,Fiction - General,Fiction-Historical,FictionComing of Age,FictionHistorical - General,GENERAL,General Adult,Historical - General,United States

A beautifully-written homage to the "Cannery Row" days of Monterey, California, populated wiith some of the real people of the time John Steinbeck, Ed "Doc" Rickettes and the rest, accompanied by fictional charaacters that come to life. If you are a Steinbeck fan, you'll want to take a look at this one. If you know and love Monterey, you'll have no trouble navigating these pages. A fine piece of fiction from a new author.
When I first heard about this book, all I knew was that Steinbeck was a character and it referenced Cannery Row, therefore I was skeptical that I'd like it because I'm not a huge Steinbeck fan, nor know much about him. Well I'm glad I took the chance on it anyway because no prior Steinbeck knowledge needed and the main character who we see as a young girl and an old woman, is so engaging, I appreciated getting to know her. The book is extremely well written with descriptions that really transport you to feel like you are there. Not a light summer read (which frankly bore me) or a dense academic prose, but the sweet spot that perfectly aligns with the genre "literary fiction".
Here’s what MONTEREY BAY is not.
It’s not a history; it’s not a biography; it’s not about Ed Ricketts and John Steinbeck, though it includes “Ed Ricketts” and “John Steinbeck.”
That’s the fun part!
Though heavily researched, Lindsay Hatton’s debut novel is a fanciful rearrangement and intermingling of fact, memory, and imagination. MONTEREY BAY is atmospheric and impressionistic, less about cliff-hanger plotting and more about a sense of place and time unfolding in a current that pulls the heroine and the reader along.
Oh, one can say the novel also follows the cultural movement from early, get-your-hands-wet, rubber-boot marine biology to the contemporary, corporate, aquarium “experience.” But it is the long passages of Ms. Hatton’s sensuous language that beguile.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I recommend it for those who appreciate interesting characters and intriguing descriptions.
Very interesting especially if you live in Monterey.
Wonderfully written first novel with impressive character development. I enjoyed reading Monterey Bay and was honored to discuss the writing process with the author when she joined our book group! Look forward to more of her writing!!
In her first novel, Lindsay Hatton vividly evokes the beautiful geography of Northern California; it's the ideal backdrop for the compelling and complicated story being told. That's the story of Margot, a young woman engaged in two distinct battles with her (much older) sometime lover/employer/inspiration Ed Ricketts and her father, who is either an entrepreneur or a grifter. The novel stretches over many decades, and while, yes, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and John Steinbeck are parts of the story, they're not the whole story. I admire how Hatton so skillfully and confidently braids together fact and fiction, and the sentences and descriptions are simply beautiful. It's a wonderful book.
I was somewhat disappointed in the novel. The comments by the author were helpful for who was real and who was fiction. A combination of odd characters. The history could have been developed more. The book did make me want to read more about the history of the aquarium and Cannery Row.
