Witnessing the death of a loved one
In 2008, I received a call from my father that he was bringing Peggy, my stepmother, to a hospice. She had lost her months-long fight with cancer. It was probably too late for good-bye. I was going to fly down to be part of the family as Peggy passed away, to be there for my dad. Mostly we sat with her, or in a room where we could welcome others as they came to bid Peggy farewell and offer condolences.
I had been part of such a gathering before, and this time I wrote down what I felt and thought over those few days. Since then I have shared this with others who are going through a similar experience. They have all appreciated knowing that someone else has had the same thoughts, feelings, and questions.
My wife had just given birth to twins, and they were still at the hospital. I had to go home, and so I didn’t get to participate in the funeral. The Painful Doorway is my goodbye. It is my reflection on the process of sitting beside a loved one who is about to depart. (In addition, I've included some simple suggestions to help you get through a time like this.)
