The story line is 5 star but I bought this collected edition to replace three separate older books, and I am really disappointed by the general flimsiness of the binding and the thinness of the paper. Since I bought it for the story I chose to keep it, especially as I usually only reread this one annually - but if the book is going to see hard use, forget it. Buy the separate novels or buy a hardcover collection.Tags : The Elenium: The Diamond Throne The Ruby Knight The Sapphire Rose [David Eddings] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The Elenium The Diamond Throne The Ruby Knight The Sapphire Rose David Eddings 9780345500939 Books Reviews
I have not finished the book yet do to time constraints but it is very good. I find it is well written, definitely better than Harry Potter....The author has well developed characters. It is kinda the classic hero on a quest for a beautiful girl he loves and wins. The book was in perfect condition and much cheaper than a bookstore price.
I fell in love with David Eddings' work in high school. His books are written almost tongue-in-cheek, and there's a sly wit to his stories. Having devoured the Belgariad and Mallorean, I chewed through the Elenium and Talmuli rather quickly. Unfortunately, paperbacks have a way of finding themselves lost when they have been loaned out too many times, and I was missing several of the individual books of the story of Sir Sparhawk. I LOVE having the trilogy in one binding. Granted, it's not as durable as a hardbound book, but it IS nicely packaged in one edition. So far, the binding glue seems durable, which is a nice change from some of the Del Rey books I have purchased in the past. I have been reading David Eddings' works for almost twenty years now, and his books are worth the time to read and re-read.
The text is Very Small and very finely printed.
Has to read in daylight or good read g light.
Cheaply printed but good story
David Eddings is one of my favorites in fantasy. His characters have a sense of humor that is so lacking in many books of this genre. I find myself re reading them like visiting with good friends. The series starts with a Knight coming home to find his Queen dying of poison, only being sustained by the lives of twelve fellow knights, who in doing so pass away one by one every 28 days. He is therefore on a quest to find a cure, and the ones behind the plot.
This is a great fast moving Trilogy. Good twists and clever changes to the story line. I enjoyed the story, but was displeased with the physical book itself. My copy has 17 pages missing from the 2nd volume. It was a good chapter. I'd like to know what I missed.
A very good story. One that I would actually give 4.5 stars. I knocked an additional 1/2 star off due to the very small print, and mediocre quality of the binding. Fortunately I have the second trilogy in hard cover, but lost the first trilogy due to water damage during storage.
I enjoyed this book. It is your basic sorcery/fantasy escapism, and I really like that sort of thing. This is the first book by Eddings I have ever read, and am looking forward to reading more of his works. If you like fantasies that are set in the usual medieval surroundings (complete with castles, serfs, and vast stretchs of largely uncivilized land) you'll probably like this. If you like not having to worry too much about whether the main character will live to see the end of the book, and the fact that most of the bad guys will probably meet suitably grisely ends, you'll probably enjoy this. If you like swords, theives and beautiful queens, you'll probably like it. It's not going to change your life; you won't be inspired to be a better person and you won't have a sudden, deeper understanding of the world, but I think that's ok. Not every book needs to do that to be worth the read. If you want a way out of the world for a little while maybe the bills are a little too high, or the family is getting to be a challange, or maybe you aren't feeling good, this is a good book to slip away with. After all, you can't (or, at least, probably shouldn't) drop everything and run. Responsiblities are important, but everyone needs a break.
Is this the best of its kind I've ever read? No. The characters are good but not brilliant, the plot is interesting but not terribly unique. The romance is frankly ham-fisted, and, as another reviewer said, a teensy bit disturbing (I am never really comfortable with romances between young girls and the men that raise them, related or not, never mind the fact that the author never really convinced me that the hero was truly in love with the girl to begin with. You know she loves him, in the way that all teens love, and you know he loves her, but he usually seems to love her as a father loves a daughter, and when things progress, it's just hard to switch the gears)
Thankfully, the romance is not the starring plot. Sparhawk is usually fighting or traveling rather than making love, and while I love a good romance (Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorites) I infinately prefer it this way in this book. This book is humourous, interesting, and ends satisfactorily. I'm glad I got it!
