This book made me think a lot about how we can communicate with nature and other creatures. Also, makes me realize we are not alone on this planet and should put some thought into where we are going and why,

Communicating with Orcas The Whales' Perspective Mary J Getten Reviews

This was recommended reading prior to a dolphin trip with the author. I knew nothing about Orcas and was quite surprised to read about their lives, particularly the strong familial bonds they form. As ancient creatures they hold a wisdom that seems to be sadly lacking in the human species.
I gave this book 5 stars because it is a book that I feel is authentically written. Mary Getten successfully conveys to the reader how whales communicate in a way that is easy to understand. I was convinced she does talk to them and would love to read more books by this author.
Thought provoking book from a woman who spent decades working with and studying the amazing orcas. What I'd wondered and sensed about "Granny" (the senior whale leading one of the pods) after seeing her twice in the Sound, I was delighted to learn just how 'sentient' she truly is. Would that today's leaders were so committed to working / living for the good of the whole!
I can't believe that with all the whales out there in the oceans that someone could just sit down in their living room, "call" out the whales name, and have an intimate conversation (or actually an in depth interview) with one specific whale, without even being in the same city much less within eye sight of one another. I'm pretty open minded and believe there is an underlying "energy" in all living things, but I still need at least a tiny bit of science or evidence behind this supposed telepathic ability. That just wasn't available.
This book helped to realize that animals are no different than humans and in fact may be far more advanced than humans. There is so much that we can learn from animals. This book was refreshing in the fact that it explained that humans need to learn to take care of themselves and mind their actions and animals that were here millions of years before us can be the teachers and care givers of us. Very easy to believe that animals can communicate with us and are just waiting for us to listen. They realize that we are all children of the Earth. We have much to learn if our superior attitudes would step aside, we could return to our unity with nature. Thank you to these two ladies for allowing us to share in this wonderful dialogue with orcas. May we all learn to communicate with our earth brothers and sisters. Great book. I have read numerous times and plan to do so again. Every time I take away something new.
I found this book to be a compelling story of the author's journey into a world seldom viewed. Most readers' experiences with these amazing creatures is via tv, movies or the occasional news story of a single whale incident. Readers stay involved momentarily and often move on to the next saga of how we humans consistently mistreat the animal world. Mary Getten found a true "calling" at a time when doing so publicly was viewed as crack-pot drivel. She persisted and shares her story in a way that rings true. She began as a skeptic doubting her abilities, skills and even her sanity, but somehow managed to navigate herself through this underwater world and find a balance. She makes us believe that there is hope for this species and even explains how we can make a positive impact on their welfare. She does not exaggerate or gush and that makes her story spanning so many years even more heartfelt than similar literary excursions into the realm of animal communicators. I finished the book wanting to know even more about Granny!
I couldn’t put this book down! I enjoyed reading this very much, as there was a lot of synchronization with event in my life!
