In Book 1 of the series, the reader is introduced to the Resistance. A group of Bionics that strive to be accepted and live in a world that shuns them. The main character, Blythe, is well developed. You feel her struggles and the reader connects to her story. Blythe saw her family gunned down because they refused to turn her over to the Military Police to be destroyed. She fights the demons inside her daily and with the help of her friend, Dax, she copes. Her salvation is in finding and rescuing others like her.Since this book includes multiple POVs the reader also get view point of Dax. We get his shady back story and well as a gruff look at the Resistance and their plan to rescue the hostages and other Bionics by storming the Capital. The romance that he wants between himself and Blythe is explored. Don’t be fooled. This is no sappy love story. The action and suspense grips all pages.
Lastly, we get the POV of Gage who also becomes a love interest for Blythe. Gage, Dax, Blythe, the Professor, and other members of the Resistance stage a rescue for Olivia and other Bionics from the prison in Washington D.C. Of course dangers and unexpected chaos arises. The team gets separated and receives aid from a very unlikely source, The Rejects. This doesn’t come without a price. Secrets are revealed and lives are changed forever.
I cannot say enough wonderful things about Alicia Michaels and her Bionics Series. These stories play out in my head like a television series. Mrs. Michael’s vivid descriptions of the post bombed U.S. and the part human, part machine Bionics comes alive in my imagination. I am so glad I gave this series a shot. I haven’t been able to put it down.

I've had the ebook for a while. CTP generally makes the first book in their series free. When I found out the audio version had been released though, I checked it out and saw it was on sale because I had the ebook. Glorious! I bought it immediately.
I have known about this series for a few years now, back when this book was a bunch of shorter books. And it looked really good, but I just kept putting it off. I was more worried I was expecting too much from it and didn't want to be disappointed. I know, that sounds incredibly dumb of me. But I'm known to do stuff like that from time to time.
Anyway, I finally decided it was time to read it.
Although I liked the narrator, there was one thing that bothered me. It is split POV between 3 people, two of which are male. It just was weird that a dominantly male storyteller was read by a female. She wasn't bad or anything, just not what I'd have preferred.
This story is pretty fast pace, with the government trying to capture and basically dismantle all the people who need their upgrades to survive. I like how each of the three main characters contribute to the story in their unique ways. I usually have a difficult time differing between POVs of the same gender while listening to an audiobook, but both Dax and Gage are so vastly different. I really appreciated that.
Most important of all, Blythe is a super fraking awesome heroine.
The ending though. Holy gawd blasted monkey balls! I really did not see that coming. I'm glad the audiobook for the 2nd book released last month, because I'm going to need to read that ASAP.
Two thousand years in the future, and it would seem, Humanity has not changed. Same old fears and prejudices as always. This time around, there was a nuclear attack on American soil, and many who would have died, either from blast related injuries, or from radiation poisoning, are given a second chance at life, at the Government's behest, ala the Restoration Project, with bionic enhancements. Unfortunately some of the victims have used their enhanced abilities for crime, and now said Government wants to hunt down and dismantle all of the "Bionics."
This is Blythe's story, a girl who dreamed of joining the army, Military Police, specifically, before she was caught in one of the blasts, losing an arm and an eye. Now she is on the run, a part of the Resistance. All they want is to be able to live in peace, and not be feared by the rest of humanity. A story of strength, survival, friendship and love.
I chose this book because the description sounded promising, but the book did not live up to its own hype. The author does a good job of staying in present tense, but her use of unnecessary profanity was bothersome. I say unnecessary because the story takes place in the year 4010, yet the characters curse using present day terms, effectively destroying any chance of futuristic realism.
As for the plot, it doesn't work to place the story 1900 years in the future yet describe events that would be more believable if the story happened 50 years in the future. Sorry, but I don't believe there will be a president in 4010, let alone a United States. The world changes, and that is simply too huge a leap. The scifi elements are missing...it is like jumping from 2016 straight to 4010. Present day science is used, with very little imagination on what the world would be like.
The love interests happen too fast, and it is a bit jarring that though the characters talk about being in love, they refer to the sex act in less than flattering terms. For instance, one of the main characters says "...I love Blythe" yet a few paragraphs later describes himself as "...a man with basic needs food, water, scratch, <f-bomb>."
Lastly, the plot line is a thinly veiled look at politics and racism. Granted, those are great topics, and have been used successfully in the scifi genre, but this is a ham-handed effort at best. The reader is told the story is in 4010, yet every page is filled with descriptions of today's world.
The POV shifted, and while I could tolerate Blythe's thoughts, Dax's crude machismo forced me to stop reading. Recommend passing this one by.
