2.5 starsSomewhere around the halfway mark, the characters stopped being real people and became literary characters. By the 80% mark, they were beating me in the face with their literary characterness.
You know that kid who tries too hard with the jokes, trying so hard to be accepted? That's what this book was to literature. Please see a deeper meaning in me, the book begs. I'm not just another coming of age story. Sorry, but, yeah. You are. Sadly, the book would have been really fantastic if it had just toned itself down a little bit.

Crossing the Tracks has an authentic voice and a clever style, making the most of its truly engaging characters. A tale of healing through the gentle, caring presence of others, this story is both powerful and rich with detail. This is a rare find for the teen or young adult reader seeking both romance and substance. However, readers of all ages will relish Barb Stuber's portrayal of an era not so long ago - yet vastly different from today. The charm and subtleties of this story merit much thought and discussion. The general good feeling it provides is a rare pleasure. Don't miss meeting Iris Baldwin and the other "good folks" inside this cover!
This is a great book. The story line is super. We read this for our book club and everyone liked it. We had a super discussion about this book.
I read this novel cover to cover today. I appreciate the wisdom of the goddesses and tenderness between the characters.
Excellent book. Very well written nd engaging. I also learned a lot from it. Just the way I like to learn history
I enjoyed this book, though I'm decades past "coming of age.“ the draw for me I live in Kansas City area , and have done so my entire life. I imagine many 6th grade girls would enjoy.
I have some rules for what makes a book readable for me. Pull me into the characters. Make me care. Have an interesting, unpredictable plot. Write beautifully and create metaphors that make me stop and reread then. This book delivers. On all counts. Three cheers Barb Stuber.
I was fortunate to attend a bookclub meeting recently where Barbara Stuber spoke. This is one fine, smart, witty, and very humble author. Where her stories come from could be a book in itself and maybe someday it will be. But for now, ignore the "young adult" quantifier which really only means it's for ages 12 through 112 and sit down for a non-stop read! The characters will draw you in and you will feel like you are standing in the corner (maybe one of the darker corners, but who knows) spying on everyone involved in the telling of this tale. Just be prepared to love it!
